THE STORY: This medal commemorates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Sierra Railroad. In 1897 the Sierra Railroad was built to connect Oakdale, Ca to the Mother Lode. Up until that time, the only way to haul goods and materials to and from the Mother Lode was by wagon or by the river. Both systems had major faults and goods were often lost. The Sierra Railroad provided a quick, safe and economical way to ship goods. The medal depicts one of the Sierra Railroads trains coming around a bend toward the viewer. The railroad is still in existence today taking sightseers on short excursions. This is also one of the most popular medals the club has produced.
