THE STORY: This medal commemorates the 125th anniversary of the founding of Turlock. CA. In 1871, John W. Mitchell, a major land owner south of Modesto wanted the railroad to come further south so he would not have to haul his crops so far to reach a railhead. In an agreement with the railroad he donated the acreage needed to start a town and railhead and the town of Turlock was born. The medal features a bust of Mitchell, a locomotive. a stand of grain and a group of melons. Turlock was known at that time as a railroad town and was famous for Its grains and melons.
